8 steps to cleaner, healthier hands

I watched our 5-year-old daughter, Isabelle, carelessly run her hands under the faucet -- no soap -- then slide them down a towel hanging nearby, barely drying them. After a serious discussion about germs, Isabelle now takes an almost too-careful approach: She turns on the faucet, digs her fingernails into the bar soap, washes her hands, washes the faucet ("It has pee-pee germs on it."), washes her hands again ("to get the faucet germs off"), then dries them.  I guess she's getting the hang of it.8 steps to cleaner, healthier hands There's no doubt about it: our schools -- our world -- would be healthier if everyone practiced good hand-washing techniques. Hand washing is the best way to get rid of 95% of the germs on your hands. Disney Family's Wonder Time.com offered the following hand washing steps for kids age two and up: Step 1: If you have to turn knobs or work cranks to get a paper towel, then dispense it before you start washing your hands. Step 2: Turn on the cold water and slowly add hot water until it feels warm. Turning on the hot water first may scald your child's hands. Step 3: Wet both hands in the running water. Use one hand to dispense soap onto the other hand. If using bar soap, rub it between both hands to create a lather. Step 4: Shoot for bubbles. After getting them between the palms, move the bubbles around to the backs of the hands and in between the fingers. Add more water if necessary. Continue washing for as long as it takes to recite the alphabet. Step 5: Rinse hands under the running water until all of the bubbles are gone. Germs can remain with the bubbles... Step 6: Use the paper towel that's hanging from the dispenser to thoroughly dry the hands, then use the same paper towel to turn off the faucet. At home, dry your hands on a hand towel and turn off the water with your bare hands -- if you keep your home bathrooms clean, you'll be fine. Step 7: Still hanging on to that same paper towel, open the door (which is probably covered with germs from the people who opted to skip steps 1-5 above). Step 8: Discard the paper towel. These steps are appropriate for adults and kids alike, so remember that the next time you're at the mall. For some serious motivation, read Risks at the Zoo, for more reasons to practice good hand-washing techniques.

How to treat a wart

Your child has a dreaded wart. Now what? How to treat a wart Warts are not usually problematic, and they tend to go away on their own. Depending on where its located, a doctor may opt to remove a wart that causes pain or discomfort. Without treatment, a wart can take up to two years to go away. There are a few different methods the doctor can use to remove a wart:
  • burn off the wart with an electrical current
  • freeze the wart with liquid nitrogen
  • remove the wart with laser treatment
Treated warts may fall off within a few days or they may require additional treatments. Most doctors refrain from cutting off a wart because it may result in scarring. At-home treatments may be suitable for an older child with a wart on the finger or hand. Applying an over-the-counter or prescription medicine to the wart may take several weeks or months to yield results. The chemicals in wart medicines are strong and can damage healthy skin. Do not apply these medicines to the face or genitals without first consulting a doctor. To promote the success of treating the wart at home, children should do the following:
  • soak the wart in warm water
  • remove dead skin on the wart's surface with an emery board (be sure that the emery board will not be used for nails!)
  • apply the medicine to the filed wart
  • cover the medicated area to allow the chemicals to work
Make sure your child doesn't scratch or pick at the wart. Doing so may cause the virus to spread to another area of the body or cause the wart to become infected. Although warts can be a nuisance, they are common in childhood and generally do not cause serious problems. For more information, read Where warts come from.

Where warts come from

What do you know about warts?Warts, part one Common among kids, warts are generally harmless and go away on their own. A wart is a skin infection caused by viruses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. How does a child get warts? The HPV viruses that cause warts are passed from person to person by close physical contact or from something that a person with a wart touches, but your child won't automatically get warts from touching another person's wart. Kids who frequently have cuts or open skin or those who bite their nails tend to get warts because the viruses are able to find a place to enter the body and cause the wart. The length of time between contracting the virus that causes warts and when the warts appear varies and can be as long as several weeks. Are there different kinds of warts? A common wart is a small, dome-shaped bump that may resemble the head of a cauliflower. A flat wart is smoother than other kinds of warts and about the size of a pinhead. A plantar wart is found on the bottom of the foot and makes walking uncomfortable. A filiform wart has a finger-like shape and is flesh colored. Where on the body do warts appear? Warts can appear anywhere on the body, but most appear on the fingers, hands, and feet. Warts that are sexually transmitted may appear in the genital area. Filiform warts are often found around the mouth, eyes, or nose. Any area of the skin that is cut or scratched becomes more vulnerable to warts. Picking warts may cause warts to spread to other parts of the body. How can I prevent my child from getting warts? There is no way to prevent warts, but good hygiene should always be encouraged. Kids should wash their hands and skin regularly with soap and water. They should also wear waterproof sandals in public showers, locker rooms, and around public swimming pools or hot tubs. By the way, a child cannot get warts from a frog! Read How to treat warts for more information.
