The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
This is the first book of 7 in a series called "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis. I'd say it's appropriate to read to a child as young as 5, but even adults will get a lot out of these books. They are among my all time favorites!
